Most will remember 2020 as the year our nation got sick, but for me it was a year of intentional healing. I focused most of my energy on healing from childhood + adult trauma and releasing toxic relationships that no longer served the Queen I am today. On this journey (btw it’s still flowing), I discovered the primary toxic relationship I needed to release was the one I had with myself. I realized that the unconditional love I longed for was inside me.
For me self love started with embracing all of me – natural, curly hair included. It’s been quite the journey, but I’ve loved every bit of this process! The last time I flat ironed my hair was on Dec 17, 2019. I honestly didn’t think I could do it. While I ditched hair relaxers in 2011, I embraced silky straight hair as part of my identity.
Like the products I use on my skin, and in my home, I knew I wanted hair care products that were free from harmful chemicals.
I’m so happy to have found Curl Definition (@curldefinition) – a black woman-owned line free of formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, paraben, sulfates, mineral oils, and petroleum jelly.
I’ve discovered safer products to keep my curls hydrated + moisturized + poppin’!
If we plan to teach others how to treat us + love us, then we must first start with the relationship we have with ourselves. More than for myself, I want safer, non-toxic products to use on my kid’s hair so they can learn how to safely take care of themselves as they grow up and learn new healthy habits for their daily hygiene.
Excited to see how much more I grow on this journey! If you have natural hair products you love, please share them with me.
