Mother's Day was a holiday I dreaded as a little girl because I lost my mother to a violent crime when I was ten on May 7, 1992, a Thursday right before Mother's Day. It was a day that highlighted my greatest pain. But, my loss inspired me to connect with and provide hope to others walking a similar path.

My sister + I founded Motherless Queens (@motherlessqueens) which hosts an annual Mother's Day brunch honoring young Queens that have experienced our same loss. Due to COVID, we haven't had the opportunity to host the event since 2019, but I am looking forward to all of the hugs and fellowship in the coming years.

As a first-generation college graduate, it is important to me to help those who have experienced such a detrimental loss pursue higher education without the worry of additional debt. My hope is that the recipient of this scholarship feels the love and support from someone that has genuinely walked in their shoes.
